This work explores the figure of the Seerer the person believed to possess the ability to perceive what others cannot: to look into the past, glimpse what may lie ahead, interpret signs, and offer guidance to those seeking understanding.
Across many African communities, the Seerer has traditionally occupied a significant place within the social and spiritual fabric of the family. Their role may take different forms depending on the community, culture, or religious tradition, but the underlying idea remains familiar: there is someone who sees beyond the ordinary and helps others navigate what they cannot yet understand.
The many faces in this composition represent the different dimensions of the Seerer. Their numerous eyes suggest vision beyond physical sight the ability to observe, interpret, remember, anticipate, and reveal. The Seerer does not simply look; they are believed to perceive.
The layered faces also speak to the idea that this knowledge is not always isolated to one individual. It can be connected to ancestors, family histories, inherited wisdom, dreams, intuition, and cultural knowledge passed from one generation to another.
The work therefore presents the Seerer as a figure positioned between what has been, what is, and what may come someone people turn to for interpretation, direction, and guidance.
Rather than defining the Seerer through one particular religion, this piece explores the broader African cultural imagination surrounding those believed to see beyond the visible world.
The Seerer does not merely see what is in front of them. They are believed to see what lies beneath it, behind it, and beyond it.
